Essential Maintenance Tips for A/C Evaporator Coils

If you want your home’s central A/C to efficiently and reliably perform its job throughout San Antonio’s lengthy cooling season, you’ll want to make sure it gets regular maintenance. Without maintenance, the air conditioner will expend more energy to cool and dehumidify your home and may not provide the comfort you expect. While you can depend on a professional to clean the A/C evaporator coils, it’s a handy thing to know if you’re the type of homeowner who likes to keep on top of household maintenance.

What Do Evaporator Coils Do?

In a central air conditioner, the evaporator coil is located inside the house, either connected to the furnace plenum or located in the air handler if there’s no furnace. Refrigerant in the evaporator coil transitions from a liquid into a gas after passing through an expansion valve. As this happens, the refrigerant extracts heat energy and moisture from the indoor air, cooling the air.

A/C Evaporator Coils Get Dirty

As time passes, the cool, damp evaporator coils will get coated with dust and other materials. These materials will restrict the essential heat exchange that occurs as the refrigerant removes heat from the inside air. This reduces cooling efficiency and may eventually lead to malfunctions in the compressor and other parts.

Cleaning A/C Evaporator Coils

To clean the evaporator coils, turn off the air conditioner’s power at the breaker box. Remove the cover from the evaporator coils and clean out the condensate drain line to make sure the A/C can remove the water that accumulates during air conditioning. Use a brush with stiff bristles to remove dirt from the coil. A clean cloth will wipe away what’s left. Spray the coil with an appropriate foaming solution.

Of course, the best course is to schedule professional maintenance. Air conditioners are complex systems, and unless you know exactly what you’re doing, it’s better left to a pro. To schedule an A/C maintenance tune-up for your San Antonio home, please contact us at Beyer Boys.
